Siatica Treatment

A) Cold packs
Generally the pain goes by itself with bed rest for few days, till the inflammation
nullifies. You can take steroids, but applying cold pack may help your muscles to relax. Applying the pack gives comfort to the muscles, and lets the nerves relax,
which might have contracted during any trauma. Cold packs available at medical
stores are better as water never leaks out of them, and you simply need to freeze
them up in the freezer before applying.
B) Hot packs
Hot packs are even better than the cold ones, and at times both should be used in
conjugation with each other. The blood which might have clotted in the nerves, is
smoothened and the nerve relaxes.
C) Over-the-counter medications for Siatic patient
No specific surgery is required till the pain is bearable. Non steroidal and anti
inflammatory medicines should be used as pain relievers. If the pain persists for
more that three months only then surgery is advisable.
D) Prescription drugs
The drugs which would be prescribed are analgesic ones like aspirin, ibuprofen
and others.
E) Regular exercise
Movement would be painful but it helps to reduce the inflammation. So regular
exercises and specific prescribed exercises would be beneficial. Physiotherapy
would work wonders in some cases. Its not a serious disease and surgery becomes
inevitable only if the pain persists for quite a long time.
F) Epidural steroid injections.
Steroid injections are required in the cases which are midway, where there is no
acute requirement of surgery, but pain relievers are not advantageous. In such
cases steroid injections are must.
G) Surgery
Surgery is seldom needed to cure sciatica, but if any of your bowels are affected
then it is an emergency. One needs to take MRI test, for detection of the exact
location of the nerve before undertaking any surgery.
