Introduction to Siatica |
|
| Sciatica is leg pain which begins from the end of the
spinal cord and it travels down the leg where the sciatic nerve is located.
It causes pain when there is a slipped disk in the vertebral column. The
pain is generally caused in one side of the body. The dislocation of the
disc causes discomfort and acute pain followed by the pain in the siatic
nerve. Siatica also causes a leg cramp which may stay for about a few weeks,
causing unbearable pain to the patient. How it is happened? This pain doesn’t occur due to any accident or injury. It is caused in older age due to excessive wear and tear of the body part. At times it may be caused due to sudden pressure on the disk and the gel like liquid within the disk may protrude out and gets spilled up in the surroundings. The nerves in the viscinity may get inflated and irritated generating back pain and pain in the back of your leg from the buttock. Siatica may also happen due to spinal canal stenosis, where the spinal canal is pressed causing pressure on the spinal cord. This reduces the space for the spinal cord, which pinches the nerves going to the siatic nerve and causes irritation. The siatic nerve runs through the muscle in the buttock region. When due to any trauma if the muscle is contracted, it causes compression of the sciatic nerve causing pain. The patient is relieved of the pain when the muscle relaxes.
